Can you still remember your first attempt at a yacht design? Does it still exist?
A&R 01
Whilst working as an architect and industrial designer in London, I was keen to take my sailing to the next level and try some offshore racing. I agreed to buy a small cruiser/racer yacht from Hunter Boats on the proviso that they would build it to my design. When the boat was finished, Hunter Boats received many enquiries to build more boats to my design. As a result, they appointed me to design the full range of Hunter Boats, which were very successful. Subsequently, Fairline asked me to design their new Squadron range and, once the first of those appeared on the market, Sunseeker offered me a contract as their exclusive designer on a 10 year contract.

Was this career always your dream, or did an unusual opportunity lead you in this direction?
A&R 02
As above, it was somewhat by chance. I graduated as an architect in Peru, South America, and was practising as an architect there, but was always interested in the technical side of design, and architecture did not seem to offer such opportunities. I was offered a Duke of Edinburgh scholarship to continue postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art, London, where I graduated as a Master of Design (Engineering) at the department of Industrial Design (Engineering). Designing yachts fitted beautifully within such career path, and certainly has offered me plenty of technical and innovation opportunities.

Is there a specific design that is particularly close to your heart? If so, why?
A&R 03
I have to say that the 88m DynaRig sailing yacht Maltese Falcon must rank as my favourite, principally because I was given a free hand to design the whole yacht inside and out. The owner was open to suggestions, from the innovative DynaRig to a very special interior and many technical breakthrough ideas which are now slowly appearing on other projects.
