The ships were always there. As a child, Mark Mämpel often peeked over the fences of shipyards like A&R in Lemwerder, marveling at the yachts being built on the river Weser, not far from his parents’ house. He sailed with his father on a 33-foot ketch, and later, his father—a sailor and craftsman to his core—built him his first Opti when he was just six years old. As he grew older, Mark competed successfully in sailing regattas across Europe throughout his youth. Water, boats, and wind—that was, and still is, Mark Mämpel’s world.
In 2001, he fulfilled his childhood dream of designing superyachts. One of the most prestigious was the 87-meter Maltese Falcon, for which he oversaw the design at Ken Freivokh Design. From 2004, Mark spent over 14 years working with Andrew Winch on many significant yachts, including Al Mirqab, Slipstream, Cloud 9 (both versions), Excellence, and the award-winning Madame Gu. In 2018, it was finally time to return to Lemwerder and close the circle. As a child, he had admired the yachts from outside the fence—now, he designs and runs his dream projects for international owners and renowned designers, as well as for his local shipyards.
