Designing a superyacht is a highly collaborative and complex process. It begins with understanding the client’s vision and requirements, followed by conceptual sketches and detailed planning. Designers focus on every aspect, from exterior lines and interior layouts to technical specifications and performance features. Can you still remember your first attempt at a yacht design? Does it still exist?

I ‘ve been drawing boats since I was a kid. At age of 5 none of my designs were built, however I am sure those sketches still exist somewhere in my mother’s attic

Was this career always your dream, or did an unusual opportunity lead you in this direction?

Ever since I can remember thinking about what career path I wanted to follow, I knew I wanted to design cars or boats. It was after an Atlantic crossing on a sailboat in my late teens, that I knew Yacht Design was the perfect choice.

Is there a specific design that is particularly close to your heart? If so, why?

A&R 03

I think seeing the first yacht design “coming to live” is always special. Back then, I was also the design project manager, and this led to my first interactions with the owner and his team. It is so close to my heart because the working relationship developed into a special friendship over the years of this built, and even beyond.

What was the quirkiest or most unexpected request from a client?

What is the most important advice you would give to new yacht designers?

Design is a passion and no 9-5 job. Be well prepared to spend lots of after work hours either in the office or networking.

What role does sustainability play for you and your clients?

Sustainability plays part in most of our design and non-design decisions, however it is important to differentiate what is really sustainable and what is in the end “green washing”. We follow a specific process with the owner when we develop their vision to ensure they are guided in every aspect in making the right design choices.

What future trends in yacht design excite you the most and why?

A&R 08

I believe new clients want to push limits in terms of design and experiences. They want to see new places, have adventures while learning along the way. The clients’s focus on physical and mental health challenges us to approach design differently in order to create a retreat for the mind and body. Spending time outside is at the core of this and as a Yacht Designer with specific expertise in Exteriors, we have some very exciting ideas to work on.
