HIVEX WASTE REMOVAL

HIVEX – A FORWARD-LOOKING PROJECT FOR
THE REMOVAL OF PLASTIC WASTE IN RIVERS AND OCEANS

 

In the course of its more than 117-year history, the traditional shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen has always been prepared to go new ways and to get involved outside its traditional fields of activity. So, no one was surprised when the trainees got involved with a forward-looking project. Through a TV appearance in 2019, Toralf Zimmermann (Head of Research, Development and Innovation at A&R) became aware of the then association Pacific Garbage Screening. At that time, no one could have imagined that this would develop into a long-term and trusting cooperation. The association, now renamed everwave community, and the associated social startup, everwave GmbH, have declared war on plastic waste in rivers and oceans.

PLASTIC WASTE
IS A THREAT

Every year, more than 12 million tons of plastic waste end up in our oceans. We, the people, are responsible for this. Through our behaviors and consumption, we ingest tens of thousands of plastic particles per year, including through our food, clothing and hygiene products. This in turn can have an impact on our health.

FOR OCEAN PROTECTION

Abeking & Rasmussen is participating in the Gross Tonnage (GT)-based reinvestment program to protect the oceans. Through a structured approach to reinvesting in our precious seas, we contribute to a more sustainable future for the yachting industry. The program was initiated by the Water Revolution Foundation to reduce the environmental impact of the yachting sector. With this commitment, we support one of the first structured programs dedicated to ocean conservation within the yachting industry.

SETTING NEW STANDARDS FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY

Our digitization efforts make processes more efficient, transparent, and sustainable. By reducing paper usage, ensuring access exclusively for authorized individuals, and improving availability around the clock, we are shaping a forward-looking way of working. With innovative digital tools for 3D documentation and seamless issue management, we are setting new standards, particularly in FAT, HAT, and SAT testing. These solutions are already being successfully implemented in projects, underscoring our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and progress in all areas.

For decades, we have prioritized exceptional education and take pride in passing on our knowledge and experience to the next generation. Each year, we offer around 50 apprenticeships and dual study opportunities – a commitment that is especially close to our hearts. Our quality as a trainer has been recognized by the Chamber of Commerce (IHK), an achievement we are particularly proud of.

We place great emphasis on sustainability by supporting our trainees not only professionally but also personally, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future. With passion and responsibility, we invest in tomorrow’s skilled workforce, creating the foundation for long-term success – for us, our apprentices, and our industry.

We offer a 35-hour workweek and use working time accounts, which can be used for either time off or overtime compensation. Flexible working hours allow employees to structure their workday individually, complemented by the option of remote work. This way, we create an environment that harmonizes professional and personal life.

HIGHEST SAFETY AND QUALITY STANDARDS

Our shipyard accomplishes high safety and quality standards, ensured by comprehensive certifications such as ISO 9001 and ISO 27001, as well as strict compliance with national and international regulations. Our experienced shipyard captains and STCW-trained crews conduct sea trials with precision and safety, supported by regular training and inspections. Additionally, we meet all requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code with certified facilities and approved security officers. Our quality management system ensures continuous improvement and maximum reliability across all processes – enabling safe and efficient operations at the shipyard.
