PUSHING LIMITS

Winch Design has had the pleasure of working with Abeking & Rasmussen on numerous projects over the past 30 years, challenging the status quo and staying at the forefront of innovation. Among these, the most memorable project is 80m Excellence, working with an experienced owner to create a ground-breaking and industry defining project. At the time, Excellence represented Abeking & Rasmussen’s most challenging project in both structure and design. The 80m yacht set a new standard with her razor-sharp bow, which swoops back a full 10 metres before joining the line of the main deck.

The sheer scale of the project required Abeking & Rasmussen to dedicate countless hours to perfecting and tank testing the naval architecture. One of Excellence’s most defining features, the striking double-height mirrored glass, posed a significant challenge. This was overcome using state-of-the-art technological engineering. To this day, although double-height glass has been mimicked through the use of internal support structures or painted external bulwarks, no other yacht has managed to achieve the same complex engineering of glass running continuously over two decks.

A MASTERPIECE IN THE MAKING — HETAIROS

In 1992, after 662 intense and exhilarating days, Hetairos was born—a project so ambitious that only Abeking & Rasmussen had the expertise to take it on. Even their skilled shipwrights faced challenges, from shaping a 70 mm thick wooden hull to perfecting every curve, panel, and surface. „Every detail was carefully contemplated, tested, and refined,“ recalls artist and chronicler David Baker. The result? Hetairos is far more than a sailing yacht—it’s a one-of-a-kind work of art.
